Scalp Pigmentation
Care Guide
-
Arrive with a Clean Scalp
Please come to your appointment with a freshly washed scalp, free of oils, hair products, and residue. A clean surface ensures the pigment adheres evenly and promotes better healing.Avoid Haircuts on the Day of Treatment
If you plan to trim or shave your hair, do so at least 24 hours before your session to avoid scalp sensitivity or open pores.Do Not Apply Products
Avoid using gels, pomades, oils, or any hair/scalp products on the day of your appointment. These can interfere with pigment application.Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol
Refrain from consuming caffeine and alcohol for at least 24 hours before your session, as both can increase sensitivity and the likelihood of minor bleeding.Avoid Blood Thinners
Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning medications for 24 hours before treatment (unless prescribed by your doctor), as these can affect pigment retention.Stay Hydrated & Eat Before Your Appointment
A light meal and proper hydration help you stay comfortable during your session, which may last several hours depending on the coverage area.Avoid Sunburn or Tanning
Do not tan or sunburn your scalp for at least one week prior. Sun damage can make the skin overly sensitive and compromise results.Plan Ahead
If you’re planning multiple SMP sessions, follow your technician’s scheduling recommendations. Most clients require 2–4 sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, for optimal density and realism. -
Avoid Touching the Area
Do not touch, scratch, or pick at your scalp after the procedure. The skin is healing and sensitive—disturbing it can lead to pigment loss or uneven results.Keep the Scalp Dry for 4 Days
Avoid water, sweat, or steam on the treated area for at least 4 full days. This includes exercise, saunas, swimming, and heavy sweating.Avoid Hair Washing or Shaving
Do not wash or shave your scalp for 4 days after treatment. After day 4, you may gently rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry—avoid scrubbing.Avoid Sun Exposure
Keep your scalp protected from direct sunlight for at least 10 days. UV rays can cause pigment fading. Once healed, always apply SPF when outdoors.Do Not Apply Products
Avoid oils, creams, hair products, or alcohol-based solutions on the scalp during the healing period (first 4–5 days) unless directed by your artist.Light Flaking or Dryness May Occur
Mild flaking or dryness is normal as the scalp heals. Allow it to shed naturally—do not peel or scratch the area.Avoid Heavy Exercise
Refrain from strenuous workouts or any activity that causes heavy sweating for at least 5 days post-treatment.Healing Timeline
Days 1–4: Mild redness, tenderness, or slight swelling may occur. Keep the scalp clean and dry.
Days 5–7: Flaking or light peeling may appear; the pigment may look slightly lighter.
Weeks 2–4: Color settles and softens to a natural shade.
Week 4+: Follow-up sessions can be performed to refine color and density.
Long-Term Care
Use gentle, sulfate-free shampoo once fully healed.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning.
Keep the scalp moisturized with a light, non-greasy lotion after healing.
Schedule touch-ups every 12–18 months to maintain a fresh, defined look.
-
You’ll notice an instant improvement in scalp density and definition right after your session. The pigment dots will appear darker and more prominent initially—this is completely normal and part of the settling process. Over the next few days, the color will soften and blend naturally with your skin tone and existing hair follicles.
-
Mild redness, tightness, or tenderness on the scalp is common immediately after treatment. This typically subsides within 24–48 hours as your skin begins to heal. The area may feel slightly warm to the touch but should not be painful.
-
As the scalp heals, you may notice light flaking or dryness. This is the skin’s natural exfoliation process. Avoid picking or scratching—allow the flakes to shed naturally to ensure even pigment retention.
-
The pigment may look darker during the first few days but will lighten by 30–40% once the skin fully heals. This gradual softening creates a realistic, natural appearance that mimics tiny hair follicles.
-
Some areas may appear lighter or less dense after your first session—this is expected. SMP is typically completed over 2–4 sessions, allowing the technician to build up pigment density and create a seamless blend.
-
Itching can occur as the scalp heals, usually around days 3–5. This is a normal part of recovery. Do not scratch—use a gentle moisturizer once advised by your technician.
-
Over the following weeks, the pigment will settle into its true tone. Environmental factors such as sun exposure and skincare products may slightly influence color, which is why touch-ups are essential to maintain the ideal shade and definition.
-
Most clients require multiple SMP sessions spaced 10–14 days apart to achieve desired density and color depth. Once complete, maintenance touch-ups are recommended every 12–18 months to refresh the look and keep results crisp.
